What LGBT pride celebrations and events are held around the world?
There are various different ways LGBT pride is celebrated around the world. They include:
- Pride parades: Also known as pride marches, pride events, or pride festivals, these parades are held in remembrance of the Stonewall riots.
- LGBT Pride Month: In 2009, U.S. President Barack Obama declared June as the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trangender Pride Month, which is why so many LGBT pride celebrations are held in June. Many countries, not just the United States, now celebrate LGBT Pride Month in June.
- Gay Games: This was originally called the Gay Olympics, created in 1982 in San Francisco. The Gay Games are the world's biggest sporting and cultural event, with almost 50 sports to participate in; band festivals, choral festivals, cheer squads, and visual arts amongst other cultural activities; and also memorial events.
